Teachers
The purpose of this website is to educate students about bicycling, Missouri, and the countries represented on teams in the 2009 Tour of Missouri bicycle race. At this site you will find online resources and tasks to complete while using those resources. You will also learn how to use (by video tutorial) several free/opensource applications.
Go to the Stages pages for a list of the activities available. Teachers may choose the activities they wish to use with their students. For this reason, the activity tasks are not a hierarchy of tasks in which one must be completed before beginning the next. They are independent of each other and designed to enhance student learning by grade and subject/skill level. Classified as Stages 1-7, each stage will provide activities based on relevant subject matter. Click here to view them on this page.
The stages are classified for the students on the Overview page. Each stage provides levels, named 'gears.' You need to review these level activities to decide which gear best fits your students. Many activities encompass several gear levels. In general, the gears are designed to match the grade levels:
Gear 1, K-1
Gear 2, 2nd grade
Gear 3, 3rd grade, etc...
Most activities here require teacher input or design; they are not fully-developed lesson plans. There are not evaluation/assessments available for all activities. Every stage will have at least one high level cognitive activity that features computer applications, and they are more open-ended and constructivist. These activities are TILPs, which represents a Technology Integrated Lesson Plan. Most TILPs on this website provide these features: Analysis, Design and Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. These special activities will be labeled "Gear Up!" on the Stage pages. View this Gear Up! example from Stage 5, Foreign Languages.
Because a TILP requires more teacher strategy and implements enhanced learning with technology, it is important for it to be as time-friendly as possible. Grading rubrics are posted on the Evaluation page so that students may view the guidelines and responsibilities for the Gear Up! activity. The rubrics are posted as PDFs and Word documents and were designed using Rubistar. If you wish to make changes to the Word rubric, you must first save it to your own computer (or an external storage device) and then make the changes.
If the Gear Up! activity is too lengthy, you can incorporate parts of it into your own developed activity. If you don't have time for students to use the computer application, use the same resources to have them create a poster or write a paper. Read through the various Gear Up! activities and change them to best suit your own time frame and classroom.
The Conclusion is a general wrap-up or summary designed to review with students their experience by asking rhetorical questions. Extensive or supplemental resources are also available. These resources may include books and other Internet sites to extend the activity lesson.
Consideration was made to avoid sites with advertisement. However, sites change without notification. If you view an objectional ad on a site, please contact the webmaster. Whenever possible, activities using applications have web-based alternatives to provide opportunities for teachers who are unable to download to their computers.
All graphics, resources, and directions to locate freeware or applications are cited on the Credits page. Please feel free to email the webmaster with questions or suggestions: tomr7@live.com.
Farmington school buildings are assigned several countries to adopt. You will need to read through the resource Internet links to find those pertaining to your country for country activities. There is one activity everyone should complete. All schools should make flags of their adopted countries (details and resources are located on the Stage 4 page). Some buildings will be asked to complete the foreign language activity (Stage 5) for the presentation to the athletes and audience on September 9. Banners and posters (in English or another language) would also welcome the international visitors to Farmington.
